The questions we ask that you should ask yourself NOW.
At what age would you like to retire?
This is not "at what age do you think you will retire”, it is your ideal retirement age. The number you would like to achieve to enjoy your post work life to its fullest.
How much income will you need to be comfortable in retirement?
Keep in mind all the usual bills, supporting children, house upkeep and odd renovation, updating cars, yearly holidays ect…ect… will you own your house by the age noted above? and what will your dollar be worth at that time? will milk and bread be $15? (just as an example lets say we need $65,000 pa) everyone’s amount will be different.
Take that rough yearly figure and multiply it by the number of years you think you will be in retirement (average lifespan - age of retirement) e.g. if I would like to retire at 58 and the average male life in Australia is 83 that leaves me 25 years of retirement.
Ok now we have our $ figure and timeframe.
For our example and everyone’s will be different we need $65,000 per year for 25 years which is $1,625,000.00 in total needed for our retirement.
At the age listed above, what will I have if I continue doing what I am doing.
What will my super be worth ? do I have any other investments? Savings? If this total number comes close to the one you have calculated for yourself congratulations! you are on the right and more power to you.
If however you are like the rest of us and have that “oh shit’’ moment I’m a bit short. Maybe its time to start taking action. I think you will be surprised at how easy it can be to get started and how the right property can also improve your current lifestyle as well as your retirement goals.
